Project Development:
YEMEN
The rehabilitation of traditional water conservation systems in the
Republic of Yemen through the application of Islamic conservation
principles.
OBJECTIVES
- To set up a three-day training workshop based on the Qur’an
and Sunnah with the aim of educating and familiarizing people
about the foundations of Islamic Environmentalism.
- To follow up with a review
- To further consider the popularisation of Islamic environmental
education in Yemen
- To consider the application of Islamic environmental principles
in re-establishing now defunct irrigation systems and establishing
new systems where appropriate.
LOCATION
The project will be located in a rural area consisting of eight villages
in the District of Makbana in the Governorate of Taiz. The names of
the villages are Al-Haisa, Al-Hugra, Al-Qurayya, Al-Mahma, Al-Dakhila,
Al-Turba, Al-Huqaif and Al-Mawg. The workshop itself will take place
in the city of Taiz, preceded by a one-day field visit to the villages.
Taiz is the administrative capital of the region and is located approximately
65 km. from the project zone. It also provides central services and
expertise for the region and has a university.
BACKGROUND
The District of Makbana has suffered from the scarcity of water for
a long time, much of it due to the decline of the traditional water
conservation systems in Yemen as a whole. This has led to a reduction
in farming in the area with severe impacts on the economic life of
the people. It is anticipated that the successful application of this
project will bring positive benefits to the economic life of the people
of the district. It is also not uncommon for people having to travel
long distances to obtain water for their own consumption. As the workshops
will take place in the city of Taiz, perhaps it is worth noting that
the city also faces a problem of water conservation despite plentiful
rainfall.
IMPLEMENTATION
It is anticipated that an initial field trip will be undertaken during
autumn/winter 2003. The aim of the trip will be to produce a preliminary
project evaluation and set up a working committee that will organise
the workshop. Briefing sessions will be conducted with all the relevant
agencies including regional and local government, religious and educational
institutions and the university.
The second visit to the area will take place in spring/summer 2004.
It will be for the delivery of the workshop, which will run for three
days. The first day will be spent in the project zone; the second
and third days will be spent in intensive study and feedback sessions
in the city of Taiz. The participants will be drawn from leading people
located in the villages, Al-Ittifaq, the leading non governmental
organization in the region, ulema, teachers, academics and leading
politicians. The workshop will be designed for forty participants.
